Problem Statement
Handwritten medical prescriptions contain important information such as medicines, dosages, and instructions, but extracting that information from handwritten documents is difficult for conventional text-recognition systems.
Unlike printed documents, handwritten prescriptions can contain irregular writing styles, varying character shapes, overlapping strokes, and complex layouts. This makes automated recognition a computer-vision and deep-learning problem rather than a simple OCR task.
The challenge was to develop a system capable of taking a photograph or scanned image of a handwritten prescription and automatically identifying and extracting the relevant textual information.
Proposed Solution
A deep-learning-based computer vision pipeline was developed to detect and recognize handwritten prescription content from images.
The system combines image preprocessing, visual detection, and deep-learning-based text recognition to transform an unstructured prescription image into machine-readable information.
Processing Workflow
Prescription Image → Image Preprocessing → Text Detection → Handwriting Recognition → Extracted Prescription Information
Image Processing
Input prescription images are first processed to improve the quality and consistency of the visual information presented to the recognition model. This provides a cleaner representation of handwritten content for subsequent processing.
Deep Learning Recognition
A deep-learning-based recognition component is then used to identify handwritten textual content within the prescription and convert the visual patterns into machine-readable text.
Information Extraction
The recognized content can subsequently be structured into prescription information, creating a bridge between the original handwritten document and digitally processable data.
Core Idea
Turning handwritten prescriptions into machine-readable medical information.
